FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose the right therapist? Finding the right therapist can feel overwhelming, especially if you're not sure where to start. The good news is, you don't have to figure it out on your own. At The Therapy Space, we'll take the time to understand what has brought you to therapy and help match you with the therapist whose experience, approach, and personality best meet your needs. Every member of our team brings their own unique skills, experience, and specialist interests, allowing us to provide personalised support for adults, children, young people, and couples. Our aim is to make finding the right therapist feel simple, supportive, and tailored to you.

What happens in the first counselling session? The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another. We'll talk about what has brought you to therapy, what you're hoping to gain from the process, and answer any questions you may have. There is no pressure to share everything straight away, and you don't need to prepare beforehand or have the "right" words. The first session is about creating a comfortable, supportive space where we can begin at a pace that feels right for you. Together, we'll discuss your goals for therapy and decide on the best way to move forward.

How much does counselling cost? Session fees vary depending on the therapist and the type of therapy you are accessing. We're happy to discuss our current fees when you get in touch and will provide clear information before you book your first appointment. We believe it's important that you have all the information you need before beginning therapy.

Is online counselling available? Yes. Alongside face-to-face appointments at The Therapy Space in Lisburn, several of our therapists also offer online counselling. Online therapy provides a flexible option for those who may prefer to access support from home, have busy schedules, or are unable to attend in person. We'll be happy to discuss whether online or face-to-face therapy is the best option for your needs.

How often should I attend therapy? Many clients begin with weekly sessions, as this helps build consistency and allows the therapeutic relationship to develop. Depending on your needs, goals, and circumstances, sessions may later become fortnightly or be arranged in a way that works best for you. Your therapist will discuss this with you and regularly review what feels most helpful throughout your therapy journey.

Do you offer counselling for children and young people? Yes. We have therapists who specialise in working with children and young people, and we also have a dedicated therapy room designed specifically with younger clients in mind. Our therapists use age-appropriate approaches, including creative therapeutic methods where helpful, to provide a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment where children and young people can explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. We'll also discuss with parents or carers which therapist and approach would best meet their child's individual needs.

Can I change therapists? Absolutely. Finding the right therapeutic relationship is an important part of successful therapy. If, for any reason, you feel another therapist within our practice may be a better fit, please let us know. We'll support you through the process and, where appropriate, help connect you with another member of our team. Our priority is ensuring you receive the support that feels right for you.

Do I need to be in crisis to come to therapy? Not at all. Many people come to therapy because they want to better understand themselves, improve their relationships, navigate life transitions, or simply have a space to reflect and feel heard. You don't need to wait until things feel overwhelming before reaching out. Therapy can be just as valuable for personal growth, self-awareness, and developing healthier ways of coping with everyday challenges.
